Hiroshima
Hiroshima
Hiromi Tsuchida
First Edition, 1983. 293 pages. Book measures 8.25 x 10.25 inches. Printed wrappers. Text in Japanese, with an English translated foreword. Black and white plates throughout. This Book is divided into three parts: Part I: Hiroshima Collection | Part II: Hiroshima 1945-1979 | Hiroshima III: Hiroshima Monument.
“In Hiroshima Collection, Tsuchida photographed wastes, clothes and daily utensils from more than 5,000 to 6,000 items preserved at the Hiroshima Memorial and tried to read through the messages of the holocaust victims.
His photo-reportage is focused on the victims’ lives today in Part II. Joined by reporter Ryuichiro Kukiage, Tsuchida tracked down most of the 186 school children and college students whose essay appeared in the book Children of the Atomic Blast, published by Iwanami Shoten in 1951. Tsuchida tried to bring out what’s hidden under their consciousness by photographing their various reactions when faced to the photo-journalist.
In Hiroshima Monument, photographed between 1979–1983, he looked at those old things like trees, bridges and buildings that still remained in Hiroshima. His intention in photographing these common things buried and forgotten in the bustling city is to view them as monuments of the bombing and see through them vulgarity of the post-war Japanese.” —from the Foreword.
Very Good+ in wrappers showing light rubbing. Binding is square and tight. A scarce title.
