Iwata Nakayama: Modern Photography
Iwata Nakayama: Modern Photography
First Edition, 2003. 317 pages.
Book measures 8.5 x 10.25 inches. A comprehensive book on the work of the photographer Iwata Nakayama (1895–1949). Nakayama was exposed to the cutting-edge trends of modernism in New York and Paris in the 1920s, and played a central role in modern Japanese photography after returning to Japan, where he was based in Ashiya, Hyogo Prefecture. This collection includes over 700 works, including some unpublished material alongside other important works, ranging from his early works from the 1910s to those from his time in New York and Paris, as well as photomontages, portraits, Kobe landscapes, and advertising photographs from the late 1920s. Iwata Nakayama's photography studio was completely destroyed in the Great Hanshin-Awaji earthquake, and the organization of the materials by volunteers, and this book, has been a long-held dream, finally realized.
