Jost Hochuli has been working as a freelance graphic designer since 1959. Although book design forms only a small part of his activity, he has become well-known particularly through this work. Besides his book designs, several of his commercial artwork pieces and typefaces are pictured in this volume. Outside of being one of the most admired mid-20th-century Swiss graphic designers, Hochuli is also know for is clear and precise writings on typography and Book design, most notably the volumes Designing Books: Practice and Theory (with Robin Kinross) and Detail in Typography.
The book aims to be the ultimate synthesis of Hochuli’s work. Structured in three thematic blocks—“Commercial Graphic Design”, “Typefaces Cut in Wood and Linoleum” and “Books”—each section is accompanied by theoretical texts alongside copious examples drawn from Hochuli’s archive. Includes 600 illustrations throughout the text.
