These photographs were taken by Ihei Kimura during two stays in Paris – three months in all – in 1954 and 1955. Ihei Kimura spent September–December 1954 visiting France, Italy, East and West Germany and the Nordic countries. At this time Japan was emerging from the American occupation subsequent to the Second World War, and was in the midst of economic reconstruction. For the average Japanese travel outside the homeland was all but unthinkable, and Kimura’s trip had been made possible by a newspaper, a camera manufacturer and a brand of film. –Yukio Yamazaki (Former Editor in Chief Asahi Camera).
