Lettre A. St. Loup.
Lettre A. St. Loup.
Daido Moriyama
Third Edition, 2013. 148 pages.
Book measures 9 x 11.5 inches. Hardcover in dust jacket, with obi laid in. Signed by Moriyama on the title page. First published in 1990, this new edition of Moriyama’s Lettre à St. Loup contains a collection of images taken in and around Tokyo in 1990. Photographing his life and surroundings throughout the year, the images create a visual letter, an ode to the French inventor Nicéphore Niépce, who is recognized as the creator of photography. Street scenes, motorcycles, nudes, landscapes and images of plants, all create a portrait of the world as Moriyama viewed it, evoking images created by surrealist works of artists such as Man Ray, Eugène Atget and Andre Breton. Moriyama’s body of work composes a vision of Tokyo as a “dream capital”, a visual urban labyrinth of both memory and place.
