Peasants in a Rural Village
Peasants in a Rural Village
Yoshikazu Minami
First Edition, 1972. 192 pages.
Books measures 8.5 x 10 inches. Black & white gravure photographs throughout. Text primarily in Japanese, with an English translation at the back of the back of the short essay ‘Shedding Light on a Peasant’s life’ by the poet Sadao Shibuyawhich. This essay gives insightful context to the people of the village of Chichibu where this work takes place, and Minami’s approach to these photographs.
This book is Minami’s first photo collection, and in the afterword, he writes, “I have compiled the unadorned human beings of rural villages that I have been photographing for 16 years.” In contrast to the rapidly developing cities after the war, what is depicted here is the everyday life of a rural village that seems to have remained unchanged. From the feudal customs of farming families and ceremonies to farm work, and the young people in whom new values are being nurtured. This documentary portrays the pre-modern rural life and farming practices of the area, as well as the gradual signs of change.
Book is in Very Good condition in solid binding. Dust jacket shows light wear to edges and a touch a rubbing. A well preserved copy. Slipcase is in Good condition showing some wear and staining.
