Sanrizuka 1969–1971

Sanrizuka 1969–1971

Kazuo Kitai

First Edition, 1971.

Book measures 7.25 x 9.5 inches. Softcover in photo illustrated wrappers. This book documents Kitai’s time spent living within the Sanrizuka farming community between 1969–1971, and documents their daily life during the resistance to the government’s plan to build Narita International Airport on their farmland. In these grainy b&w images, Kitai shows an intimate, insider’s perspective of the struggle. His images detail the long pauses between the fight, the waiting, the picnics, the harvest, the incongruous Kinen Shashin amongst the barricades. In these images he consciously avoids images of anger and violence, and through his direct relationship with the people there, offers a more subjective view of this conflict.

Wrappers are bright, and show only minimal signs of wear to edges. One faint crease to spine, though binding is solid. A Japanese newspaper clipping is affixed to front endpaper, which has offsetting to inside of front cover. There is writing in red marker to back side of last page. Faint foxing to endpapers. Cardboard slipcase shows mild rubbing. A Very Good copy of a scarce important volume.
