Sixteenth-Century Printing Types of the Low Countries

Sixteenth-Century Printing Types of the Low Countries

H.D.L. Vervliet

First Edition, 1968. 366 pages. Book Measures 9 x 12 inches. Translated from the Dutch and with a foreword by Harry Carter. Includes 267 illustrations throughout the text. Erratta slip laid in.

This book is a catalogue, annotated and illustrated with specimens, of the types made during the sixteenth century in the area now covered by Holland and Belgium. In the Southern Netherlands especially, talented punch-cutters were working under the influence of greater artists in France in an idiom suited to the traditions of their own country, preparing the ground for the flowering of a distinctively Dutch style of typography in the century to come. This study aims not only to give a detailed survey of the history of sixteenth century type design in the Low Countries, but also to provide philologists, historians, and bibliographers a tool to identify sixteenth century types of the Netherlands. The typefaces dealt with are illustrated by reproductions of pages of sixteenth century books and by impressions of new type cast in the original matrices, if the matrices still exist, or, if they do not, by composite photographs showing the characters of the fount.
