An extraordinary book of photographs showing daily life in Nagano during the war-years. Kawakami Kesataro recorded everything that showed impact of the war on life of ordinary people, digging air-raid shelters, sending soldiers to the front, injured soldiers returning, inflation, police notices and interrogations, poignant prayer-slips affixed to Buddhist statues etc. Kawakami was a news photographer for the Shinano Daily News, a local newspaper, and thus had authority to cover even politically sensitive events. A very scarce publication.
