Tsuguhi Shinkawa - Shashinshu

Tsuguhi Shinkawa - Shashinshu

First Edition, 1973. 90 pages.

Books measures 8.5 x 10.25 inches. Off white cloth-covered boards in cardboard slipcase. Printed in rich black and white gravure. Text in Japanese. A collection of works by Japanese photographer Tsuguhisa Shinkawa. This photo book was published by his family members the year after his death, and contains over 80 images. In 1972, he was swept away by the waves at Minamihama, Kujukuri, and passed away at the age of 33. At the end of the book, there are comments from his wife, older brother, older sister, and other acquaintances and friends. They include remarks such as: "He had a crew cut and wore sandals or geta," "He loved sake and shochu," and "He paid no attention to sumo masters or intangible cultural assets, and his main subjects were always ordinary people. It was the life of the ordinary people. He loved the slums." These somehow give a glimpse of Shinkawa's personality. Although Tsuguhi Shinkawa is a relatively unknown photographer (considerably so outside of Japan), this book is highly popular among photo book collectors, and this collection is a coveted masterpiece. Includes a series of photographs of the alleys of Ota Ward and Kawasaki neighborhoods, the workers and bars there, and "work gloves" found on the side of the road. Former Para-affiliated. A beautifully printed volume.

Boards show light rubbing (more pronounced in photo). Slipcase shows light rubbing and typical faint age-toning. Interior of book is clean. A well preserved copy of this very scarce book. Quantity of print run is unknown, though presumed to be limited.

Very Good+ condition.
